Kilimanjaro: Pre-Interview

What the hell is a “pre-interview” for a hike? I think the idea stemmed from The Ringer where they get opinions from staff before they watch the latest blockbuster movie and then interview them following it for a post interview. It’s a fun concept for film so maybe it will be for traveling. Guess we’ll find out. So here is where I’m at pre-Kilimanjaro hike:

Mindset & Motivation

  1. What are you most excited about for this trek?

Please don’t hate me but the journey. Feel like the first few days will be super refreshing - no service, meeting new people, completely different landscape and views!

  2. What part of the hike are you most nervous about? Be honest!

Slightly worried about altitude sickness - it got me pretty bad the last time I was in Colorado. However, I hit up a drug dealer (Costco) to give me a stash of their good-good to help me be prepared. Oh, also nervous about not showering for 6 days. I need daily showers. Hate the feeling of sweat, grease, and dirt, so yeah, not real thrilled for that. I did buy some “shower wipes” so fingers crossed they work!

  3. If you could describe your pre-hike mindset in one word, what would it be and why?

Anxious. As the hulk said, “Wonder how I deal with my anger, I’m always angry!” Well…yeah me…but with anxiety! But, this is like different? Leg is shaking I’m ready to do this freakin’ thing

Preparation & Packing

  1. What’s the most ridiculous thing you’re packing, but you just have to bring?

For the hike specifically, I think a Mountain Dew. I wanted to do something special at the top and cracking a dew just feels like the right way to celebrate for me. Not planning to drink caffeine on the hike, so it’ll get me extra jacked.

  2. Do you feel like you’re overpacking, under packing, or goldilocks situation just right?

I think i nailed it. Personally, feel like it’s under packing to my standard travel approach which makes me feel like I got it perfect. (won’t regret saying this)

Expectations & Challenges

  1. How do you plan to stay motivated when the trail gets tough?

“How embarrassing would it be to explain you didn’t get to the top” would be enough

  2. What’s your go-to hiking snack that’s going to fuel your summit push?

Kitkats no doubt. And, probably, Kirkland Peanut Butter protein bars

Other

  1. If Kilimanjaro could talk, what do you think it would say to you before you start?

“Are you sure you wanna do this”

  2. What’s your planned summit photo pose? Classic arms-up victory, epic jump shot, or “why-did-I-do-this” exhaustion collapse?

I really just hope I don’t dab. Think I’ll do a pose drinking a cold one (Mountain Dew)

  3. If you had to pick a theme song for your hike, what would it be?

    It’s a Long Way to the Top - AC/DC
